How to Adopt
The Adoption Procedure
When a potential adopter comes into the shelter and sees an animal he or she is interested in adopting, an adoption application is filled out at the front desk. Please bring your driver's license with current address on it as well as your current/past veterinarian's phone number. Once the application is completed, it is submitted to our Committee for approval. The approval process can take up to 24 hours. If the application is approved, we will take the animal out so the adopter and pet can get to know each other. Due to the high volume of applicants and limited staff, an animal will only be taken out of its cage after the application is approved.
One of our trained adoptions counselors brings the adopter and animal together to allow them to get to know each other better. During this time, the counselor talks to the adopter about his or her desire to adopt and may ask questions about:
- Past experiences with animals
- Lifestyle, including work schedule and the kinds of activities they
plan to do with their companion animal
- Housing situation - own or rent, size of yard, etc.
- Once we have determined that the match is a good one, the adoption
is finalized.
